1. Aperitivo Hour
Set an allocated time to create the feeling of occasion. Typically it takes place sometime between 6-8PM and lasts for the duration of just a drink or two. Keep in mind that the purpose of aperitivo is to not get drunk, it’s a social affair that is more focussed on the element of bringing friends and family together.2. Shopping
Given that aperitivo fare is simple for the most part, buying quality ingredients makes the difference between good and great. For fresh items like charcuterie and vegetables, it’s a fantastic opportunity to visit the local deli you’ve been meaning to check out. Although, many ingredients like olives and artichokes can be stored in the pantry. -
3. Preparation
The key to hosting a successful aperitivo is all in the preparation. Make life easy for yourself by prepping the food elements ahead of time and having the drinks station primed. Creating a menu for the food and drinks is a fun way of letting people know what they’re in store for, as well as keeping curveball drink requests to a minimum4. Presentation
Don’t overlook the presentation of your chosen food dishes, even the smallest consideration can elevate the experience for your guests. Wooden chopping boards double up as a rustic setting for rows of crostini & tramezzini, whilst olive & dips can be presented in small bowls (definitely not the packaging).
“If in doubt, keep it simple–Aperitivo is an informal and joyful affair”.

5. Food
If in doubt, keep it simple–Aperitivo is an informal and joyful affair, so there’s not need to overstretch yourself. If this means laying out a few olives and cheeses–great. If you’re feeling more capable, then consider something like crostini–which is essentially sliced baguette with toppings. Try an elevated combination of marinated artichoke hearts, pesto genovese with grated Parmigiano. Pizette, arancini and fritto misto are all up for grabs for the aspirational cooks out there too. -
6. Drinks
The spritz has become synonymous with aperitivo and none more so than the Aperol spritz. Fortunately, they are incredibly quick and simple to make on demand. The official recommended ratio is 3:2:1 (3 parts Prosecco, 2 parts aperol, 1 part soda), but you can toy with this to your preference. If you want something a little more traditional, try an Americano–this bitter sweet drink is a perfect summer cooler. If you’re looking for something stiffer, then a Negroni is the answer you’re looking for.
